India's health ministry told the Lok Sabha that ICMR has conducted no study to assess whether ultra-processed foods are addictive like tobacco. Minister of State for Health Prataprao Jadhav said global evidence links such foods to obesity, diabetes, heart disease and mental disorders, but noted the evidence is observational and does not establish causality. ICMR has instead focused on awareness campaigns, dietary guidelines and labelling rules. FSSAI's 'Eat Right India' movement and labelling regulations mandate nutritional disclosures, but violations invite action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
