The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) launched MyUPI, an AI-powered chatbot built on its in-house small language model FiMI, at the Global Fintech Fest on September 10. The platform is meant to give users a single view of UPI transactions and AutoPay mandates across third-party apps. NPCI says it offers 24x7 multilingual support, but currently supports only English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Bengali. A test of the chatbot found several announced features do not work yet. The Safety Switch, meant to let users decline debit transactions if a compromise is suspected, triggered a response that it had no information about it. The Automated Chargeback Processing feature also did not respond when tested. The Pay Safe feature does not provide useful information beyond cautionary alerts, and checking a VPA is limited to three times a day. The privacy policy and terms of use, effective September 1, 2026, do not clarify whether user transaction data is used to train the FiMI model. The model uses third-party tools including Mistral models, Llama 3, BERT, and Gemma 3. The learn about scams section links to news stories from earlier this year.

## Indian Opinion Analysis

NPCI controls the UPI rail that processes over a billion transactions a month, making any change to its help interface consequential for crores of users. The claim of a small language model trained specifically for Indian finance is new, but listing FineWeb, a generic web-text dataset, among the model's dependencies raises questions about what finance-specific data was actually used. The missing Safety Switch and chargeback features are the ones users would need most in a fraud situation, and NPCI's own disclaimer on MyUPI says no action is taken without bank verification. The privacy policy silence on transaction data used for training is the real gap: UPI data includes the payer, payee, amount and timestamp, and if that flows into FiMI, the consent framework would need to be far clearer than it is now.
