# Omar seeks J&K statehood, says PoK may have sought reunification

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah renewed his government’s demand for restoration of statehood and constitutional guarantees in his Independence Day speech in Srinagar on Saturday. He said the situation across the Line of Control had vindicated the 1947 decision by J&K leaders to resist tribal invaders and accede to India. Abdullah said people in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir might have protested to join J&K if its status had not changed in 2019. He also said seats remain reserved in the J&K Assembly for representatives from that region. The Hindu reports that he sought the return of powers taken from J&K and criticised centralised examinations such as NEET, NET and JEE for reducing states’ role in admissions.
