A parliamentary panel on health has recommended low-cost, standardised health insurance products for the middle class, who are often left out of government schemes. The 176th report, tabled in Parliament on August 7, also proposes capping private hospital room tariffs in metro cities at the average rate of a three-star hotel in the area. It notes that average out-of-pocket spending per hospitalisation is Rs 34,064, with medical inflation at 10-13 per cent. The panel wants room-rent-linked inflation models for standard procedures eliminated.
