PM Modi flags textile waste problem, calls it 'huge challenge'

NEW DELHI: Highlighting the issue of textile waste, PM Modi Sunday said India was facing a “huge challenge” on that front and cited a study that shows the country is third in terms of high

textile waste

generation. While raising the concern in his ‘Mann Ki Baat‘ radio broadcast, Modi said he was happy that many commendable efforts are being taken to deal with the problem. “Textile waste has become a major cause of worry for the whole world. Nowadays, the trend of getting rid of old clothes as soon as possible and buying new ones is increasing…” he said.
Drawing attention to cities carving out a new identity for themselves in dealing with the waste, Modi said, “Panipat is emerging as a global hub for

textile recycling

. Bengaluru is also creating a distinct identity for itself with innovative tech solutions. Similarly, Tirupur is engaged in textile waste management through wastewater treatment and renewable energy.”
He said while many start-ups have started working on textile recovery facilities, there are also several groups working for empowerment of ragpickers.
