# Poland’s wind turbine bases support wild bees, study finds

A study of ten wind turbines in western Poland found that the gravelled land around their bases supported more diverse plants and bees than nearby crop fields. Wild bee numbers matched those in designated grasslands, while bee diversity and abundance were highest at turbine sites. Researchers surveyed insects and weeds from May to August 2014, comparing turbine service squares with ten grassland patches and surrounding farmland. The roughly 20 by 30 metre sites were lightly managed, leaving bare ground favoured by ground-nesting bees and allowing flowering weeds to grow. Grasslands supported more butterflies, but turbine sites still had more butterflies than fields. Fly populations at turbines were similar to those in grasslands and higher than in crops.
