A hawan was performed at Haldwani’s Ram Lila Ground on August 10, two days after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge addressed a rally there. Shri Ram Sena Dharmarth Seva Nyas Sangathan members said the venue had religious significance and objected to its use for political events. The group also alleged that slogans at the rally hurt religious sentiments. Congress leaders accused BJP-linked people of targeting Kharge’s Dalit identity, a charge the BJP denied. Kharge raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha and sought action under the Untouchability (Offences) Act. Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radha Krishnan ordered an inquiry, while Union minister JP Nadda condemned the ritual and promised action against those responsible.
