As the holy month of Ramadan begins, Muslims across India and the subcontinent are gearing up to observe fasting, which is expected to begin soon. Ramadan, or Ramzan as it is known in South Asia, holds great significance for Muslims worldwide, alongside the other pillars of Islam: Tawhid, Salat, Hajj, and Zakaat. Let’s know about the date and timings of moon-sighting in India and UAE as well.

When will begin this year’s Ramadan begin in India?

The holy month of Ramadan is anticipated to begin from tomorrow, ie, on March 1. The sighting of crescent moon will occur tomorrow and the fasting will begin from March 2. If supposedly, they won’t be able to sight moon tomorrow, then the fasting will get shifted to March 3. While as per reports, Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia issued a call for the public to observe crescent moon tonight ie, February 28.

During Ramadan, Muslims observe Sawm, abstaining from food and drink from dawn to dusk. The meals which are called Sehri and Iftari marks the beginning and end of each day’s fast. A common tradition among Muslims is to break their fast with dates which is a practice deeply rooted in history and culture.

All about the significance of Ramadan

A traditional and fundamental part of the Islamic faith, the sighting of the moon before Ramadan, also known as Ramzan, Ramazan, or Ramzaan, marks the beginning of the month-long fast from sunrise to sunset, which is combined with acts of worship and charity. 

One of the five pillars of Islam is fasting, which involves refraining from eating, drinking, smoking, engaging in evil thoughts or deeds, and engaging in marital relations from sunrise to sunset. They have a substantial dinner known as “iftar.” They eat a pre-dawn meal known as “suhoor” to sustain them during the day.

The Islamic calendar, which is based on a 12-month lunar year with roughly 354 days, begins with the month of Ramadan. For Muslims, Ramadan is one of the most sacred months of the year.
