The Reserve Bank of India has extended the deadline for its new loan recovery guidelines to 1 January 2027, three months later than originally planned. The norms, announced on 6 August, ban banks and recovery agents from using abusive language, making calls outside 8 AM to 7 PM, or visiting without at least one day's notice. Borrowers in mourning, medical emergencies or weddings are off-limits. Agents cannot post personal details or recordings on social media to shame borrowers into repayment. The regulator wants lenders to verify agent antecedents and ensure they hold a debt-recovery certificate from the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance. Livemint reports the norms modify the responsible business conduct guidelines issued in November 2025, placing the onus for recovery agent conduct squarely on banks.
