The Reserve Bank of India has retained Tata Sons among 17 upper-layer non-banking financial companies for 2026-27, subjecting it to enhanced regulatory requirements. The RBI said the classification does not prejudice Tata Sons’ pending application to surrender its NBFC registration. No decision timeline was given. Tata Sons, a core investment company, was first placed in the upper layer in 2022. Private NBFCs in this category must meet tighter capital, governance and disclosure rules, and are required to list within three years under the RBI framework. Tata Sons sought deregistration after taking steps to reduce borrowings and reorganise its financial services operations. The other entities on the list include REC, Power Finance Corporation, Bajaj Finance, Tata Capital and LIC Housing Finance.
