Rekha turned 72 on 10 October. The actress, born Bhanurekha Ganesan, began her Hindi film career with Sawan Bhadon in 1970 and faced early criticism over her looks, weight and Hindi. She transformed herself through a calculated reinvention across five decades, winning a National Film Award for Umrao Jaan in 1981 and becoming a style icon for her Kanjeevaram saris and dramatic makeup. Veteran actors Shatrughan Sinha and Hema Malini posted birthday wishes on social media. Sinha called her an ‘epitome of elegance and style’, while Malini shared a childhood memory of dance classes in Chennai. Rekha worked in over 200 films, including Khoon Bhari Maang, Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi and Zubeidaa. Her last screen appearance was a cameo in Yamla Pagla Deewana: Phir Se.

## Indian Opinion Analysis

Four outlets cover Rekha’s 72nd birthday with uniform tribute. Indian Express traces her reinvention from an ‘ugly duckling’ to a style icon through her film roles. Times Now News highlights her refusal to be defined by one image, noting the criticism she faced early in her career. Yes Punjab’s story on Shatrughan Sinha’s wish calls her an ‘epitome of elegance and style’, while its story on Hema Malini’s wish recalls their childhood dance classes in Chennai. The coverage is straight celebratory reporting with no critical stance, the re-invention narrative shared across all sources is the story’s theme, not a contested one. No next step is named in any source, leaving Rekha’s continued public appearances as the open note.
