Rao was arrested on July 5 for the murder of an elderly woman and was in judicial custody. Jail staff found him bleeding and moved him to Repalle Government Hospital, then to Tenali and later Guntur hospitals as his condition worsened. Police say Rao was distressed over not getting bail. His wife and son had visited him earlier. The Repalle Town police have registered a case and are investigating. Superintendent B.
