# SC proposes special courts to fast-track Manipur violence cases

The Supreme Court has asked the Gauhati High Court to consider setting up two special trial courts exclusively for CBI and NIA cases arising from the 2023 Manipur ethnic violence. The court noted that 891 of 904 witnesses in CBI cases are yet to be examined, prompting the need for dedicated courts. The CBI has filed charge sheets in 22 of 31 cases, while the NIA has filed charge sheets in 15 of 30 cases, with charges framed in only 7. The court also directed a panel to verify claims that 24,000 affected families have not received rehabilitation benefits. The bench noted that Rs 51.95 crore has been released for permanent houses, and 12,000 houses have been approved under PMAY-Gramin. Ethnic violence in Manipur broke out on May 3, 2023, killing over 200 people and displacing thousands.
