# SC gives Centre, Assam six weeks to file NRC ID card replies

The Supreme Court has given the Centre and the Assam government six weeks to file counter affidavits on petitions demanding the issuance of NRC identity cards. The final NRC list was published in August 2019, but authorities have not issued cards to the 3.11 crore people included in it, nor given rejection slips to the 19 lakh excluded. Petitioners Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, the All Assam Minority Students' Union and the Assam Sankhyalaghu Sangram Parishad argued this makes the process incomplete and unconstitutional. The court also tagged a separate petition by former NRC coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma, which seeks re-verification of the list, with the pending cases.
