# Scientists solve mystery of thick ozone layer over Bay of Bengal 2026-08-10T16:47:26+00:00 | India | Indian Opinion Desk Corroboration: 1 independent outlet Scientists have detected an unusually thick ozone layer 21-23 km above the North Bay of Bengal, the Ministry of Science and Technology said on Monday. The layer persisted for over a day, raising questions about its origin. Researchers from the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES) and other institutes used radar, satellite and balloon data to solve the mystery. A study published in *Earth and Space Science* found that ozone-rich air was transported into the region and then compressed by downward movement. The ozone concentration was much higher than normal for eastern India. The research was part of the Phase-I NetRAD-ASMA campaign, which includes the indigenously developed 206.5 MHz radar at Nainital.
