Leopold Aschenbrenner launched the Situational Awareness hedge fund in 2024 after writing about artificial superintelligence. Investor interest grew rapidly, and the fund was reportedly managing up to $45 billion by July. It reported a 67% loss in July and sold most of its listed shares to Citadel on 30 July. Regulatory filings showed exposure to AI-linked electricity and hardware companies, including Bloom Energy, CoreWeave and Sandisk. Each had fallen more than half from recent peaks before Citadel’s intervention. The fund had reported 439% returns in the first half of 2026. Public information does not establish whether it used significant borrowing, and wider market contagion remains unproven.
