India’s insurance sector has strong long-term growth potential, but foreign investment may remain selective, according to two assessments. S&P Global Ratings cited low insurance penetration, regulatory reforms, digitalisation and rising incomes as growth drivers. It also warned that slower economic growth, inflation, energy stress and a weak monsoon could hurt demand and profitability. Former IRDAI member Nilesh Sathe told ETBFSI that allowing 100% foreign direct investment will not automatically bring a rush of overseas insurers. Recent deals involving Aviva, BNP Paribas Cardif and Allianz mark a second phase of foreign participation, he said. Investment will depend on Indian partners’ willingness to sell, business fundamentals and long-term returns. Sathe expects general insurance to attract the most interest.
