# Spain set to replace India ambassador March over spending

Spain has started the process of replacing its ambassador to India, Juan Antonio March, after a row over expensive cultural events organised without Madrid’s approval, Spanish daily The Objective reports. March, who took charge in September 2024, is expected to leave within weeks. The controversy involves plans for concerts in Rajasthan featuring a Bengaluru dance troupe and tenors Joan Laínez and Zhu Huiling. Zhu, a dual Chinese-German national, received €18,000 from the embassy last year. Spain’s Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office received a report in May alleging possible criminal relevance in public procurement and fund management. Madrid has sought agrément for Alfredo Martínez Serrano, currently ambassador to Canada, as March’s successor.
