# Coastal Erosion Shrinks Sriharikota Island Beach Area by 0.68 Sq Km 2026-08-06T04:23:44+00:00 | India | Indian Opinion Desk The northern part of Sriharikota Island, home to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, lost about 0.68 square kilometres of beach area to coastal erosion between 1965 and 2018. The Ministry of Earth Sciences gave this information to the Lok Sabha in response to a parliamentary question. The National Centre for Coastal Research used satellite shoreline analysis, field investigations and numerical modelling. It found continuing erosion over the past two decades and recommended longitudinal and transitional groynes. The space centre has received Coastal Regulation Zone and National Board for Wildlife clearances for the proposed protection structures.
