A Syndicate meeting of the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit (SSUS), Kalady, held on Monday (July 7), decided to set up hostel monitoring and discipline committees as part of the disciplinary rules initiated to make the campus drug-free and ensure the safety of the students.
The rules will come into effect from Monday, with a few relaxations, said K.S. Arunkumar, Syndicate member and convener of the sub-committee that recommended the disciplinary measures in a communication.
The Syndicate members, who held discussions with the representatives of students agitating against the disciplinary rules, pointed out that students of Theatre, Dance, Fine Arts and Geography will be permitted to use the classrooms after 5 p.m. in the presence of a teacher.
The deadline for entering the hostels for undergraduate students is 7.30 p.m. while the postgraduate students must enter by 9.30 p.m. and research students by 11 p.m. The reading room along the library will be closed by 11 p.m.
The main gate of the campus will be closed by 7.30 p.m. Those eligible for relaxations and having identity cards will be permitted to leave the campus after 7.30 p.m. on the basis of submission of necessary documents as prescribed in the rules. The main gate will not be opened for them after 11 p.m.
Those staying in hostels even after completing their academic programmes should leave the facility within a week. The hostel monitoring committee will include three faculty, non-faculty and student members each. It will also have a member of the Syndicate, a security officer and a Director of the Student Services wing. The discipline committee will monitor the overall security and maintenance of discipline on the campus.
Vehicle entry will be permitted for teaching and non-teaching members and official vehicles of the varsity only. As per the High Court order, vehicles of students have to be parked at the designated parking spot outside the campus. Vehicles lying on the campus unattended will be handed over to the police. The Syndicate allotted ₹10 lakh for increasing the height of the gates and compound wall, besides setting up security cabins at all entry points.
