# States’ mining revenue share rises to 88% in a decade

States’ share of mining and coal revenue rose to 88% in 2024-25 from 65% in 2014-15, while the Centre’s share fell to 12% from 35%, according to data cited by Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy. State collections increased from Rs 13,258 crore to Rs 71,035 crore, while the Centre’s rose from Rs 7,102 crore to Rs 8,932 crore. Parliament passed the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, after the Rajya Sabha cleared it on Thursday. The Bill seeks to restrict states’ power to levy taxes on mineral rights and mineral-bearing lands. Reddy said uniform rate revisions would protect state revenues, which would continue to rise with production. The Bill now needs the President’s assent.
