# Steel consumption rises 6.5% in July as India remains net importer

India’s finished steel consumption rose 6.5% year on year to 14.4 million tonnes in July 2026, even as the country remained a net importer during April-July, according to Ministry of Steel data reported by The Hindu BusinessLine. Imports increased 9.5% year on year, while exports rose 44.1%. Consumption for April-July climbed 7.8% to 55.9 million tonnes. Production grew more slowly in July. Crude steel output rose 1.2% to 14.3 million tonnes, while finished steel production increased 1.4% to 13.7 million tonnes. TMT prices fell 5.6% month on month to Rs 56,698 per tonne. Finished steel output for April-July rose 4% to 54.3 million tonnes.
