A large analysis of nine studies covering over 480,000 people aged 35 to 84 found that regular stair climbing is linked to a 39% lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease and a 24% lower risk of premature death from any cause, reports timesnownews.com. Climbing about six flights daily may offer the greatest benefit. The study, published in the American Journal of Cardiovascular Drugs, also associated stair climbing with reduced risks of heart attack, stroke and heart failure. Dr. Vassilios Vassiliou of the University of East Anglia called stair climbing a 'practical and often overlooked way' to add activity to daily life. Researchers stressed the finding is an association, not proof that stairs directly extend lifespan. They advised healthy adults to start gradually, while those with heart conditions or other medical concerns should consult a doctor first.
