# Tamil Nadu Budget targets growth but skips key welfare promises

Tamil Nadu’s TVK-led government has set a target of building a $1.5 trillion economy by 2036 while presenting its first Budget for 2026-27. Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson announced plans for an AI and Innovation City, 200 student hostels with one lakh beds, school upgrades and skill training. Education received the largest allocation at Rs 44,527 crore. The Budget estimates outstanding liabilities at Rs 10.98 lakh crore, or 27.01% of GSDP, with borrowing of Rs 1,73,445 crore and repayment of Rs 51,971 crore. It did not include several prominent campaign promises, including Rs 2,500 monthly assistance for women heads of families, six free LPG cylinders and free bus travel for women. The DMK and AIADMK called the Budget recycled and inadequate, while the government said it balanced welfare with fiscal prudence.
