# Tamil Nadu CM Vijay seeks freeze on Lok Sabha seats at 543

Tamil Nadu chief minister C Joseph Vijay has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging constitutional amendments to permanently freeze the Lok Sabha at 543 seats. The letter, sent on Thursday, encloses a resolution passed by the state assembly on August 12, 2026, which also demands 33 per cent reservation for women in the next general elections and subsequent assembly polls. Hindustan Times reports that the resolution was backed by the ruling TVK and the opposition DMK, along with Left parties and VCK, while the BJP, AIADMK, PMK and DMDK opposed it. Vijay has asked Modi to bring in necessary constitutional changes. The move comes after the Union government’s 131st Amendment Bill to raise Lok Sabha strength to 850 failed to pass in April 2026.
