# Tamil Nadu budget raises health and education allocations

Tamil Nadu has allocated Rs 23,357 crore for healthcare and Rs 52,920 crore for school and higher education in its 2026-27 Budget, presented by Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson on August 5. Health spending rose 6.62% from the previous year. The plans include 1,000 mobile geriatric centres, maternity support centres, rural telemedicine links and five zonal cancer hospitals. The education package includes Rs 44,527 crore for school education and Rs 8,393 crore for higher education. It sets aside Rs 2,000 crore for bicycles and laptops, Rs 139 crore to maintain 10,000 schools and Rs 300 crore to modernise 3,734 government schools. The Budget also allocates Rs 560 crore for one-gram gold rings for babies born in government hospitals. Nurses’ groups criticised the absence of recruitment and regularisation measures.
