# Vijay vows to protect Tamil Nadu rights in first I-Day speech

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, in his first Independence Day address, said his government would defeat forces and conspiracies working against it and oppose any move affecting the state’s interests or rights. He said the government would cooperate administratively with the Union government while opposing its policies ideologically. Vijay also promised an honest, transparent administration and said schemes such as Amma Unavagam and the school Breakfast scheme would continue. He announced a gold ring scheme for newborns from September 15, and raised monthly assistance for disabled ex-servicemen from Rs 5,000 to Rs 7,000. Freedom fighters’ assistance will rise to Rs 23,000. At Fort St George, Vijay also presented police medals and other state awards, according to the Deccan Chronicle.
