Currently, inmates learn about 20 trades, from carpentry to beekeeping, but receive no formal certification. The department says a recognised qualification could help released prisoners overcome the social stigma that blocks their employment. Daily wages in prison industries range from Rs 100 for unskilled work to Rs 200 for highly skilled work. Of 304 inmates released recently, 111 got jobs at prison fuel outlets. The department has already trained 78 prisoners who passed the NIOS exam in Data Entry Operator skills.
