Hyderabad remained outside independent India on August 15, 1947, and the city witnessed competing celebrations. Congress workers were arrested before dawn, while supporters of the Join Indian Union campaign hoisted the tricolour despite official restrictions. The Nizam’s government enforced curfews, removed Indian Union flags from trains and barred public displays of foreign flags. At Darussalam, Razakar leader Kasim Rizvi unfurled the yellow Asafia flag, accompanied by a 110-gun salute. An ‘Independent Hyderabad Day’ was also observed near Abids, while a separate meeting at the Exhibition Pavilion reaffirmed allegiance to the Nizam. The accounts show a city split between Indian independence, Hyderabad’s separate status and competing ideas of freedom.
