Two others remained missing as rescue teams searched the river. The group was collecting freshwater mussels, a seasonal livelihood activity, when strong currents swept them away. Police said around 14 people had entered the river and some moved into deeper water without assessing the conditions. When people were swept away, others entered the current to rescue them. Two survivors were rescued and taken to hospital. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced Rs 5 lakh for each victim’s family. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for each deceased victim’s family and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
