# Texas island now world’s largest reddish egret colony

After a century of protection, Green Island in the Laguna Madre off Texas has become the world's largest nesting colony for the Reddish Egret. Audubon Texas began leasing the 35-acre island in 1923 when coastal birds were hunted heavily for feathers, eggs and meat, nearly wiping out the species from the Gulf Coast. Today the island is the centre of a 175-island network managed by Audubon, and the largest concentration of Reddish Egrets globally is now found along the Texas coast. The island's thick thorny vegetation and biting insects kept predators and people away, making it a safe refuge. Besides Reddish Egrets, the island hosts Great Blue Herons, Roseate Spoonbills and other species. Conservation wardens still live on Green Island seasonally to clear trails, remove invasive predators and maintain the site. Scientists have found that the island's native plant granjeno (spiny hackberry) is the preferred nesting shrub, and Audubon is now collecting its seeds to plant on other nearby islands, hoping to expand the nesting habitat.
