Three suspected poachers were killed in an exchange of fire with forest personnel in the Holemuradatti forest under Karnataka’s Hanur Wildlife Division on the night of August 14, reports The Hindu. The deceased were identified as Anthonyswamy, Peter and Kumar. One forest employee was injured. The Forest Department’s account says the group opened fire when asked to surrender after entering the forest to hunt wildlife, prompting retaliation in self-defence. Siasat reports that another suspect escaped and that officials recovered a country-made firearm and a deer carcass. Residents disputed the department’s account, alleging the men were shot after being detained. Protests followed, with damage reported at forest offices. Police deployed reserve personnel in Hanur, while the bodies were sent for postmortem examination at Mysuru’s K.R. Hospital.
