Returning to work does not mean stopping breastfeeding, experts say. Dr. Bhawna Malik, consultant neonatologist at Motherhood Hospitals in Greater Noida, advises mothers to start expressing and storing breast milk one to two weeks before resuming work. Regular pumping every three to four hours helps maintain milk production and prevents blocked ducts. Freshly expressed milk can be kept at room temperature up to four hours, in the fridge for up to four days, and frozen for up to six months. Thawed milk should never be refrozen. Dr. Malik also stresses self-care and seeking help for pain or sudden drops in supply. Supportive workplaces with private spaces and flexible breaks make a key difference.
