Planetary scientists have found that rainstorms on Saturn's largest moon, Titan, are far more extreme than anticipated. Vast stretches of the moon sit dry for long spells before being struck by short, intense downpours that can dump over a foot of rain in a single day, according to a study led by UCLA and reported by EarthSky. The pattern of prolonged drought followed by sudden, violent rainfall appears to be reshaping Titan's icy surface in ways that closely resemble how flash floods carve deserts on Earth and Mars. Using data from the Cassini spacecraft, the team identified cone-shaped deposits called alluvial fans concentrated between 50 and 80 degrees latitude, pointing to rare, violent flooding. The heaviest storms occur less than once per Titan year, which lasts 29.5 Earth years.
