# Tamil Nadu Assembly mandates Tamil Thaai Vazhthu first at events

The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Monday unanimously passed a resolution making Tamil Thaai Vazhthu, the state song, mandatory at the start of all government, educational and public sector events. Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay piloted the resolution, which received support from all major parties including the DMK and AIADMK. "Tamil is not only a language but also our life and emotions," Vijay said. The move comes after the Union Home Ministry asked states to strictly comply with its January directive to play Vande Mataram before the National Anthem at official events. The state song, taken from the 1891 play Manonmaniam, has been sung at government functions since 1970 and was formally recognised as the state song in 2021.
