# Trump says he gets along great with Kim Jong Un 2026-08-16T09:52:43+00:00 | World & Diplomacy | Indian Opinion Desk Corroboration: 2 independent outlets (3 source reports) US President Donald Trump has posted a throwback photo with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Truth Social, saying they 'get along GREAT' despite what he called an 'unfriendly look' in the picture. The photo is from their 2018 Singapore summit, the first meeting between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader. Trump and Kim held three meetings in total, but a second summit in Hanoi in 2019 collapsed over differences on denuclearisation and sanctions relief. Trump's remarks come as North Korea has condemned upcoming US-South Korea military exercises, Ulchi Freedom Shield, scheduled from August 17 to August 27. A North Korean foreign ministry spokesperson warned that US-Japan-South Korea military cooperation was developing into a 'nuclear alliance' and said Pyongyang would respond with a new level of deterrence. South Korea's military also reported a suspected ballistic missile launch by North Korea on August 12. Trump has indicated he remains open to renewing direct engagement with Kim. In October 2025, he said he would 'love' to meet the North Korean leader again, but Pyongyang has not publicly responded and no concrete preparations have been reported. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said in June 2026 that Trump was open to a phased approach to North Korea's nuclear programme, starting with halting production of additional nuclear material. ## Coverage - ndtvprofit.com - ndtvprofit.com (2) - livemint.com This story was synthesised by AI from the 3 sources linked above.
