US President Donald Trump used a police academy event in Long Island, New York, on Friday to promote his crime record and support Republicans ahead of November’s midterm elections. FBI data released the same day showed the US homicide rate at its lowest in 75 years and overall violent crime down 9.3 per cent in 2025. Trump credited his administration and National Guard deployments, including in Washington, for the decline. However, experts quoted by AP said violent crime had been falling nationally since 2022, making one cause difficult to identify.
