Two American Airlines aircraft operating as American 2482 briefly shared airspace near Phoenix shortly after midnight on Friday, according to The Times of India and Hindustan Times. One was arriving from Chicago while another was preparing to depart Phoenix after weather delayed the inbound flight. A Phoenix air traffic controller identified the duplicate call sign and referred to the aircraft as “American 2482 on the arrival” and “American 2482 on the departure”. The arriving jet stayed above the departing aircraft, which was told not to climb too high. Both pilots saw each other several miles away and passed safely. Aviation safety expert Steve Arroyo said the overlap likely escaped the airline’s dispatch checks. The FAA and American Airlines will investigate how the duplicate scheduling occurred.
