# Indian-origin teens Bodhana, Shreyas win British chess titles

Two Indian-origin chess prodigies have swept the British Chess Championships in Coventry. Shreyas Royal, 17, won the open title, finishing half a point ahead of nine-time champion Michael Adams and other seasoned grandmasters. Bodhana Sivanandan, 11, became the youngest-ever women's champion, defeating Ireland's Trisha Kanyamarala in a rapid playoff. Bodhana, who learned the game during the Covid lockdown, has now won the British Blitz, Rapid and classical titles. Her only loss in the tournament came against Royal in round six. Royal, born in Bengaluru and now living in London, was allowed to stay in the UK in 2018 after a Home Office intervention recognising his talent. The championships had a record 1,750 entries and a £34,000 prize fund.
