# Upalokayukta orders action against illegal Hampi homestays

Karnataka Upalokayukta Justice B. Veerappa has directed Hampi officials to act against unauthorised homestays, resorts, lodges and other commercial establishments within the heritage area. The Hindu reports that around 200 homestays operate illegally across Hampi’s core, buffer and peripheral zones, while another 250 operate without HWHAMA permission in Janata Colony near the temple. Officials must verify land conversion records, building approvals and liquor licences, and report legal action. They must also arrange alternative accommodation for people living illegally within 100 metres of Janata Street and for those running commercial businesses. Hospet Assistant Commissioner Vivekananda disputed the figure of 200, but confirmed illegal homestays exist and promised a survey.
