# FCRA bill faces church takeover criticism in India and US

Christian leaders led by DMK Rajya Sabha MP P. Wilson asked Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday to withdraw the Foreign Contribution Regulation Amendment Bill, 2026, or refer it to a joint Parliamentary Committee. They also sought repeal of Section 15 of the existing Act. The bill is scheduled for discussion and passage in Parliament on August 12. The Hindu reports that the bill would allow a designated authority to manage foreign-funded assets after an organisation’s FCRA registration ends, while preserving the religious character of places of worship. U.S. Congressman Riley Moore called the proposal an attack on Christians and warned it could affect bilateral ties. India had 14,449 active FCRA certificates as of July 15, 2026.
