# US Vice-President Vance calls PM Modi, discusses strategic ties

US Vice-President JD Vance telephoned Prime Minister Narendra Modi late Saturday to discuss deepening the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. Modi congratulated Vance and his wife Usha on the birth of their son. The call came hours after the US Senate passed a Russia sanctions bill that could allow President Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100 per cent on India and other major buyers of Russian energy. Neither side confirmed whether the proposed India-US trade agreement was discussed. Ties had soured after US tariffs on India last year and Trump’s disputed claims about de-escalating India-Pakistan clashes in May 2025. The call also followed a mutual defence pact signed by Turkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
