# Varun Tej, Karthik Subbaraj in talks for romantic drama 2026-08-21T04:17:57+00:00 | Entertainment | Indian Opinion Desk Corroboration: 1 independent outlet Telugu actor Varun Tej is in early talks with Tamil filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj for a romantic drama, according to industry sources. The project would mark a departure from Subbaraj's known action and revenge films, as he is said to be planning a love story with Varun in the lead. No official announcement has been made yet. The actor is expected to first complete *Bhari*, a sports drama directed by Yadhu Vamsee and produced by his sister Niharika Konidela. Varun also has a sequel to *Kanekaraju* in discussion, though director Merlapaka Gandhi has not confirmed a timeline. Fans are awaiting clarity on which project will begin production next. ## Indian Opinion Analysis This pairing unites two distinct fan bases, Varun Tej's Telugu audience and Karthik Subbaraj's pan-Indian following from hits like *Jagame Thandhiram* and *Jigarthanda*. Subbaraj has made exactly one pure romance before (the Tamil film *Iraivi*), so a straight love story would be a deliberate shift after his recent action films. Varun Tej currently has three announced projects: *Bhari*, the *Kanekaraju* sequel, and now this. Which one actually starts filming first will signal how committed each producer is. Fans should watch for a formal announcement with a music director, Subbaraj's films are unusually driven by their soundtracks. ## Coverage - 123telugu.com led with 'reportedly' and speculative tone throughout, no denial sought This story was synthesised by AI from the source linked above.
