# Why cockroach traps fail: newborns learn colony smell from faeces

Newborn German cockroaches learn the smell of their colony by eating faeces from a communal pile, reports the Times of India. This early social imprinting keeps them close to the group and explains why conventional traps and bait stations often fail, roaches have little reason to leave their aggregation. The study found that neonates that ingested faeces strongly preferred their colony's pheromone, while naive ones showed no such bias. The findings could lead to traps using universal aggregation pheromones that attract roaches from multiple colonies, improving control in homes, restaurants and hospitals.
