The female gross enrolment ratio reached 31.2, while the Gender Parity Index stood at 1.08, favouring women for the seventh consecutive year. Enrolment also increased among women from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes. India has 1,289 universities and 48,426 colleges, including 18 women-only universities and 4,787 women-only colleges. Women form nearly 45% of higher education teachers, 31% of engineering and technology students, and 54.6% of science students.
