12 dead as Polish bus overturns on Hungary motorway

At least 12 people were killed and 10 seriously injured when a Polish-registered tourist bus overturned on Hungary's M3 motorway early on Sunday. The bus, carrying 57 passengers and two drivers, veered off a straight stretch of road into a ditch and tipped over near the town of Mezokeresztes in eastern Hungary, police said. Preliminary reports suggest the driver may have fallen asleep.

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar confirmed the deaths in a Facebook post. Polish President Karol Nawrocki expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Polish citizens. Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said the consular service was in contact with Hungarian authorities. The bus driver has been taken into custody, while injured passengers were hospitalised.
