Akshay Kumar’s Haiwaan ends run at Rs 9 crore
Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan starrer Haiwaan, directed by Priyadarshan, has ended its theatrical run with lifetime collections of Rs 9 crore, according to box office tracking sites. Pinkvilla reports the film is one of the lowest grossers for an A-lister in recent times. 123telugu calls it one of the biggest disasters in Indian cinema.
The crime thriller, a remake of the 2016 Malayalam film Oppam, opened to Rs 2.5 crore on day one and collected Rs 6.7 crore in its first weekend, after which collections collapsed. Priyadarshan has reportedly decided not to make non-comedy films with Akshay Kumar going forward, 123telugu adds.
Indian Opinion Analysis
Both outlets report the same Rs 9 crore figure, but their framing differs. Pinkvilla describes Haiwaan as a ‘low grosser’, a restrained term for a film starring a top actor. 123telugu leads with ‘Shocking’ and calls it ‘one of the biggest disasters’, adding that the director has sworn off non-comedy projects with Akshay Kumar. Pinkvilla omits the director's reported decision, while 123telugu includes it as a consequence. The balanced reading is that Haiwaan's box office performance was poor by any measure for a star-led film, with both sources attributing the failure to weak word-of-mouth and the remake's dated source material.
