Butt lightning’ pelvic pain may signal endometriosis

Doctors warn that a sharp, shooting pain in the pelvis known as 'butt lightning' could be a symptom of endometriosis. The condition occurs when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, often around the pelvis and occasionally in distant sites such as the chest.

Endometriosis is notorious for its atypical symptoms. Alongside pelvic pain, bowel problems are another less obvious sign. The disorder affects millions of women worldwide, but diagnosis is frequently delayed due to varied and subtle indicators.

The Deccan Herald report highlights the need for awareness of such unusual symptoms. Early detection can improve management of the condition, which remains underdiagnosed. Women experiencing recurrent 'butt lightning' or bowel issues are advised to consult a gynaecologist.
