Calcutta HC orders urgent EWS certificate for NEET aspirant

The Calcutta High Court on Monday directed West Bengal authorities to immediately consider the request of NEET-UG qualified student Priyangshu Mukherjee for an Economically Weaker Section (EWS) certificate. The certificate was initially denied because his mother's name was removed from the voter list during the 2026 Summary Revision of Electoral Rolls (SIR).

Justice Krishna Rao ordered the Additional District Magistrate of North 24 Parganas to evaluate Mukherjee's eligibility and issue the certificate on Monday itself if he qualifies. The court noted that Mukherjee, who scored 471 out of 720 in NEET-UG and holds a General-EWS rank of 16,401, cast his vote in the 2026 assembly elections. His lawyer argued that the EWS framework does not require a candidate's parents to be on the voter list.

Mukherjee's document verification is scheduled for Tuesday at SSKM Hospital, without the certificate he cannot proceed with MBBS counselling. The court listed the matter for further hearing on September 16.
