CBI arrests railway engineer, another in Rs 15 lakh bribe case

The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested a senior section engineer of South Central Railway and a private individual for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 15 lakh. The case is linked to a bonus claim of about Rs 7 crore on a railway signalling project worth Rs 179.50 crore.

India Today reports the CBI trapped engineer Bapiraju and Srichand, son of the managing director of Yella Constructions Pvt Ltd, in Vijayawada. The agency alleges the bribe was paid to secure approval for the bonus. The CBI statement said officials manipulated dates on the bonus file to favour the joint venture that executed the Automatic Block Signalling project.

Separately, The Hans India reports a special CBI court in Lucknow sentenced former goods clerk Durgesh Bahadur Singh to four years in prison for accepting a Rs 7,200 bribe in 2017 to reduce demurrage charges. The court also imposed a Rs 10,000 fine on him. Singh was caught in a trap laid after a complaint by a cement company.
